Rust spots

Recommended Posts

Today I'm doing clay bar & Zaino on the Focus Electric. Near the driver's door handle & on the rear left door there are a lot of rust spots. There are a few on other parts of the car, too, but nothing like near the door handle. I've scrubbed & scrubber with the clay bar until my hand goes numb & I can't get them off.

Any ideas on how to get them off? What would cause this? Is it from rail dust?

The Focus Electric is a 2013 model which was built in November or December of 2012, I can't recall the date right now & I don't think ETIS will work on my phone to look it up. It was first leased in August 2013. The family that had it before us didn't garage it & they lived on Long Island. When we first got it I had to spend a lot of time scrubbing tree sap off the paint & getting twigs & leaves out of every nook & cranny. I should've done clay bar & Zaino last summer, but I never got around to it...

I hope small rust marks like this won't cost us when the lease ends...

The Corrosion Warranty only works if the sheet metal is 'pierced', so I doubt Ford will do anything. Maybe a local Auto Detail Shop can help.

I looked at the Chemical Guys website and nothing jumped out at me. It seems too early for a <3 y/o car to be rusting through.

As I continued working my way around the car I found quite a few more spots like the picture above. None that were as concentrated as this area except in the crevice where the sheet metal of the hatch meets the rear window glass.

Anything on the hood? The hood is aluminum so anything there would point to an external cause.

No, the hood only had swirl marks which are much less visible after Zaino. The rust spots were concentrated on the left side doors & hatch area. Is the hood aluminum on the Focus too? I knew the Fusion hood is aluminum.

Oops. I forgot you were talking about the Focus. I don't know but your nearest magnet does.

Looks like brake dust to me. My FFH is white and I got a lot of those. Clay bar and a lot of arm power, you'll get them off.

I clay bar my car at least once a year because of brake dust.
