Turn by Turn directions?

I have a 2014 FFH S that I recently purchased. I was under the impression that the cars, at minimum, had the ability to give turn by turn directions without the big nav screen. Is this true? Do I just not know the right thing to say?

It is true.

 

You need to set up SYNC Services with an active subscription and link a bluetooth capable phone to the car.

Program in the destinations that you want to reach using a computer login to your account.

 

It's been a long time since I have used it but basically you say the command "Services".

The car connects to your phone and calls the Services computer.

You give it a command like "directions to XXXX" where XXXX is a previously configured destination.

The car reads the built-in GPS and sends your location to the Services computer.

The computer computes the route to your requested destination and sends the turn by turn directions to the car.

The car then disconnects your cell phone from the Services computer.

SYNC feeds you the stored turn by turn directions as you drive.

If you deviate from the route it will ask if you want to recalculate the route or suspend until you rejoin the route.

You have no say in what the path will be. During my testing it created some strange paths.

This was in my 2010 Fusion Hybrid but I don't think it has changed.

The car came with a "free" 3 year subscription to Services. When it expired they wanted $60 a year to reactivate it. I didn't bother.

My Garmin nuvi worked just fine and I could control the path of the route.

I used the Sync Services directions on my Focus before getting the FFH (which has Nav), and found it be somewhat useful. Better than pulling out the phone, but not as useful as a standalone GPS unit. I think murphy has good directions above, but you don't need to put in a destination before hand. You can simply connect to "Services" and say "Directions". It will ask you a series of questions that will allow you to find a buisiness, a nearby POI, or even input an address. Having a saved destination is FAR easier though.

You can also use the Sync Destinations app to send the address to the car in advance. This is what we usually do. Read more about Sync Destinations here.

Thanks for the help guys! I think I'll stick to just using GoogleMaps on my phone and connecting it via BlueTooth to the car.

That is what we do. So much easier changing on the fly and you can have the turn by turn prompts play over the music.
