Energi Warmup

Just picked up my 2016 Energi Titanium. Love it so far. However, with the battery charged, and I put it into EV later mode to save the battery, the ICE doesn't tuen on until you put your foot into it, as soon as you let off, the ICE turns off. The engine doesn't start and warm up. I find this to not be very good for ICE life as the oil and coolant are cold and all of the sudden the engine is running at 4000rpm for a few seconds and then back off. Am I doing something wrong?

Nothing, in EV Later mode the car will still act like a hybrid and turn the motor on and off as needed.

Ok, so there is no warmup period for the ICE to bring everything up to temperature?

The vast majority of my driving in my Energi does not use the ICE at all. I last put gas in the tank in June 2014 and still have 1/3 tank left. It will get used when the weather turns cold in a few months. I only use EV later when I am starting out on a long trip. The last time I did that was in December 2013. In EV later mode you can only go 1 to 2 miles before the ICE will be needed so it will get warmed up. In the winter time turning the heater on will get the ICE running since the electric heater can draw up to 5 kW and in the hybrid mode the battery is about 1.1 kWh. Modern cars and oils need no warmup. There are a number of reasons why the ICE will run when you think it shouldn't. Don't worry about it. It's all computer controlled and nothing can go wrongggggggggggggggg--.

jtoddk98: It seems odd to me that, with a cold engine, even in EV Later mode, the ICE wouldn't stay on long enough to come up to some minimal engine/catalyst/etc operating temperature like the non-Energi hybrids do. Depending on where you live, it may take a very short ICE run time in order to get to this minimum temperature, though. Are you sure it doesn't run *at all* from a cold start other than when your foot is on the gas?

I go through this every morning, where I use the HVB for the first few miles and then go EV-later when I hit I-95. if you set your view to the one that shows the effort of both EV and ICE (I think it's 'Engage' but not sure) you should see that when the ICE first comes on the burden that the ICE has is very small and most of the burden is still on the EV, and then after about 30 seconds it should ease back the other way.
