Tips? Looking into used 2013 ffh

Recommended Posts

Hello hello, I'm looking into buying a used 2013 ford fusion hybrid.

It seems that most of you really know what you are doing when it comes to this car.

I am wondering if you might have some tips or advice or anything that might help or aid me in making a decision?

Can I expect to get 40 plus actual mpg if I drive well, but still semi normally in town and on the hwy? (I would like to be able to drive 68 to 70 mph on hwy. And in town I would like to not have to accelerate unusually slowly)

Is there anything that you don't particularly like about the car?

I am 6'3 and 200lbs and have a wife and 2kids. Do you think I am too big for the car?

Id really appreciate any info you might be willing to offer.

Thanks so much!
-Paul

I ended up purchasing a used 2015 gray Fusion SE Hybrid with 15k miles out of Missoula, MT for 17,900 + a $199 documentation fee!

Pretty darn cool for sure. Seemed like a great deal to me. I'm super happy with it.

The 2013 was the first model year for the 2nd generation of the Ford Fusion hybrid. Many cars have lots of teething pains for the first model year and even the second year. You may experience fewer of these new model problems if you look for a used 2014 or 2015 instead of a 2013. I learned this lesson the hard way when I bought a 2012 Ford Focus and will never do it again.

We love our 2013 FFH and have had very few issues with it. We easily get 40+ mpgs and drive both highway and city streets. Check it out, test drive it both on city streets and highway and see what mpgs you get, The build date of the car is in relation to the issues these cars had. A later date appears to have less issues but some of the early built cars were fine.

If you have the VIN you can check to see if there are any outstanding recalls on the etis site.

Any other questions, ask away.

I think those that were the first recipients/watchers of the 2013 SE Hybrids would agree that there seemed to be more TSBs and claims on the forum regarding the Job 1 (built before Jan 2013) Fusion hybrids than the Job 2 (built Jan-Jun 2013) -- however mine was built in Dec 2012 and I drove it for 35k miles and it was a great car! When I sold it in Dec 2013, the lifetime MPG on the dash said 50.9 and the real calculation (based on fillups recorded on fuelly) was 47.8 (or maybe 48.7, one of those). But to get an idea as to what others experienced in real-world MPG, go to fuelly.com and filter onto the 2013 Fusion Hybrids (below link shows 160) and see how others did for MPG.

If I were in the market for one I would definitely consider a Fusion Hybrid, but use the ETIS link noted above to check build date and for outstanding field service actions.

Good luck!

The specific problems were:

1 Oil leaks around the transmission.

2. Noises from the drive shafts

3. Moldy aromas from the AC

4. Early transmission failures.

All of these could be fixed under warranty but it is difficult to check to see if they apply to an individual car. If the car wasn't among those with these problems or if they were fixed, it's OK. Numbers 1, 3. and 4. could be big repairs involving dis-assembly or replacement of the transmission or complete replacement of the ducting behind the instrument panel. The earlier generation 2010-12 did not have these problems and MPGs are only 4 mpg less. They are completely different models but use the same concepts.

Mine is a 2013 Job2 and has also been for the most part trouble free. I just rolled over 40k with a current pump average of 41.2 MPG. The more city driving you will do the higher your MPG will be.

Average for interstate driving for me might be around 40 MPG but those are long mileage trips which are hard erase from the MPG average during daily commutes.

Also look at option you might like that are only available in a MY 2014 and up.

Either way you go good luck finding the right car for you.

There is a lot to consider for your mpg. As you can see from people's reported mileage on the forum the car is easily capable of getting far more than 40 mpg. I personally drive the FFH as a normal car making almost no changes to maximize mileage. I accelerate quickly from stops and drive 75+ mph on the interstate. About the only accommodation I've made is to brake more gently to absorb all the energy that I can. After 14,000 miles my car is self reporting 42.4 mpg while fuelly has just ticked up to 40.0 mpg.

That's not to say I don't love the fuel efficiency of this car. My normal fill ups (measured by gallons in and miles driven, not the computer) the past few months have ranged from a low of 42.2 and a high of 46.6. But that's of course summer driving and a daily commute of around 100 miles mostly 60 mph. I bought the car in February and it took me 6 fill ups (about 3000 miles) to get a tank over 40 mpg. Heating the car and remote starting it will sap those precious mpg away. When I took this beaut on an interstate road trip (around 2000 miles) I averaged 36 mpg.

In short; you'll probably get 40+ mpg.

There is absolutely nothing that I don't like about this car. You can read about my joy after my long road trip here: http://fordfusionhybridforum.com/topic/10130-reflections-on-a-2000-mile-road-trip/?hl=%2B2000+%2Bmile+%2Broad+%2Btrip

About the only thing I'd consider changing is the dead pedal. I wish there was just a bit more room there, but I only noticed that on the long road trip. It doesn't bother me on daily commutes.

As for being too big for the car. I too am 6'3 and am 270 lb. I fit just fine in the car both in the drivers seat and the passenger seat. I have the drivers seat almost all the way back leaving almost no leg room behind it, but so long as your kids aren't your size, they should fit just fine.

Good luck on the car search!

I was looking for used 2014 models, and there were not many East of the Mississippi. They were priced from $19,500 to $24,500 for vehicles with under 33,000 miles. They were all purchased at auction from vehicles that were rental cars, and there were some good choices there.

That said, I found a new 2015 SE with leather & the tech package priced at $22,209, and I went directly to the dealership and purchased it. What a super deal, and I love the car.
