CarMax

Recommended Posts

I thought we had a CarMax thread but I cannot find it now.

This article talks about used car dealers selling cars with unrepaired recalls. It specifically focuses on CarMax.

I think that was you and me emailing about Carmax a while back, as I've sold several through them as it's more than I've been offered by the dealers and less hassle and risk than selling privately. I sold a car privately and the new owner never registered it in his name and the car got impounded and later involved in an accident and guess who gets pulled in? The titled owner. Yes I was cleared of liability and trouble but since then have chosen to avoid the complication.

Anyway, yes I sold the 2013 FFH to Carmax and they only had it listed for 2-3 days and it was sold, with the 13S04 fuel delivery module outstanding, and probably still hasn't been done! I will have to send the VIN to GrySql and see if he can check.

Update: GrySql did check, car still has the 13S04 outstanding as well as anything new since then. I have never received any letter so Ford must know there is a new owner -- sure wish Sirius did, I constantly get offer letters for the ESN of that car's radio!

I have sold cars to private parties many times but part of the purchase agreement is that we always meet at the car license bureau to sign the title over and they give me a cashiers check. Otherwise, no deal. Your concern is a valid one.

In MN you notify the state when you sell a vehicle which protects you from such liability. You keep part of the title & you use that to go online and report the sale. You also report the name, address & DL number of the buyer along with the sale price. This allows the state to make sure the buyer doesn't lie about how much they paid to save money on sales tax.

Same in CA, but I don't take Cashier's Check's anymore since my brother got one for his $45k BMW and it was bogus. Getting cash is almost as bad with all the counterfeit dollars out there so Carmax is making more sense all the time.

I just sold our FFH '13 to carmax. Got what I expected, was a simple and quick transaction. I would NEVER sell to a private buyer again .... Period LOL
