Occasional wrench light

Recommended Posts

2011 Hybrid 80,000 miles.

I bought this car recently, and am very satisfied.

However, I have been getting an occasional wrench light. It always goes off when I turn the car off and on again.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

hua a $20 OBD2 scanner and use a free app on your phone to see what the issue is.

Well you can do that but then take it to the Ford dealer. It indicates "Throttle control/Powertrain malfunction" and nobody should fool with it except Ford. Go to the dealer immediately.

The wrench is only a reminder that you're due for a service at the dealer (oil change especially). It is programmed to light up after a certain period of time/miles. It is reset at the dealer after service.

Nothing to do with your check engine light.

I'm not so sure about that one... I had the wrench show up once on my 2010 FFH, at 66k miles when the O2 sensor went out of range for whatever reason that needed replacement. The car now has over 200k miles and that was the only time the wrench light ever came on.

I can't speak to the gen1 FFHs but my 2015 FFH owner's manual says this about the wrench indicator lamp:

Powertrain Fault

Lights when your vehicle detects a powertrain fault. Contact an authorized dealer as soon as possible.

Note: If your vehicle detects certain faults, it will not allow you to operate the accelerator pedal. If this happens, press the brake pedal and release it. This will activate limp home vehicle operation. In limp home vehicle operation, your vehicle will accelerate in a controlled manner up to a maximum speed of 35 mph (56 km/h) on a flat surface. If you apply the brake pedal or move the transmission to neutral (N) you can override your vehicle’s acceleration.

As lolder has mentioned twice, take it to the Ford Dealer.

From the 2010 Owners Manual regarding the Wrench Icon on the instrument panel:

This can be as simple as a software update which may increase the motor/electronics coolant pump operation. You still need to take it to the dealer. It is NOT a service reminder..

Good to know, tought the CEL lights up when there's a mechanical problem.

CEL is usually an emissions fault, not a powertrain fault.
