no fuel button on the 2016

After much frustration and looking at the owner's manual and the Internet which both showed the fuel button on the center console, the 2016 does not have that button. Instead, you simply press on the fuel cover and it will pop open.

 

I hope this saves some level of frustration for others that I experienced this morning.

Well that's a good tip for others and an improvement, as the below has only occurred the very same way about a dozen times:

 

We are about to drive somewhere together and my wife gets in and purse leans down on the fuel release button and 'doink' there goes the lid release.

 

Me: "Ahh geez not again, I told you to watch for the stupid button!" (as I get out to close it back up)

 

Her: "Well it's a stupid place to put the stupid button!"

 

Yeah, about a dozen times or so...

The Fusion Hybrid has never had a fuel button. Only the Energi has the button described in the OM.

I specifically typed in Fusion Hybrid and they all have pictures of the fuel button being on the center console and OM definitely shows it being on the center console. I'm not saying you are wrong, Hybridbear, but it was certainly frustrating this morning :)

Who is "they all"? The 2013+ FFH has never had a fuel button. The 2013+ Energi has always had a fuel button because it has a different fuel tank since it can go months without using much gas. There is one OM for both the FFH & FFE and thus the OM shows the fuel button that the FFE has.

Well I can't say, haven't had the 2013 FFH in a while... but the buttons on the 2013 Energis are exactly where they should not be.

No button my 2015 FFH either. Just push the fuel door and it pops open. It was the same way on my 2012 Focus.

I have never driven a Ford (or any American car) that has a lock for the fuel door that you'd need to press a button to unlock. All Japanese cars I've driven, even Corollas, do have that feature though.

 

On my old 2008 Fusion you simply had to slip your finger under a little notch and just pull the door open. When I first bought my FFH, I didn't see the notch, and mistakenly thought the FFH had a lock like Japanese cars, and spent 5 min figuring out that I just had to push on the door.

 

So the Energi's button is for the fuel door? I always thought it was to switch between gas-hybrid and pure EV mode. I learn something new every day!

The Energi can have up to 3 buttons on the passenger side of the console. EV Mode, Fuel door, Automatic parking.

Or just two buttons that take up the same space, for cars that don't have the park assist. Notice how the larger button for the fuel door can make it a larger target to get pushed inadvertently...

This is because the engine may not run for extended periods of time on a PHEV so fuel vapors do not get purged on a regular basis. Internally, the sealed system is known as a NIRCOS (Non-Integrated Refueling Canister Only System)."

My point was that it is a stupid place to locate the button, not the functionality.

I agree. Even with the smaller button between the other two I have accidentally hit the button many times.

The worst is accidentally hitting the EV button and putting the car into EV Later forcing the ICE to come on when you don't need it. My wife has done that a few times unknowingly...

yes mine does that everytime with her purse they shouldve put these buttons elsewhere

Even the active park assist button on the FFH and gas models is too easy to hit. Granted, it's not as bad as unintentionally hitting the EV or fuel door buttons in the Energi, but it does interrupt your navigation system by showing the "searching for parking space" message on the MFT screen.

 

In the Ford Escape the park assist button is placed in the same area as the climate control buttons, which makes far more sense IMO. The Energi should do that too.

 

In the Japanese cars I've driven that feature lockable fuel doors, the release button is always to the left of the steering column, in an area where it's unlikely to be accidentally pressed or kicked. Usually near the trunk release button.

I bought my 2014 Fusion Hybrid today, and the fuel door is just the same. A quick press and it opens. It has the special Ford capless fuel input, so no lost or misplaced fuel caps. My other vehicles have caps tied to the input.

The Energi has the button because it has a pressurized fuel system. It has a pressurized system because the fuel can stay in the tank for a long time. I last put gas in my fuel tank in June 2014 and it is still 1/4 full.

FYI- I just bought a 2013 FFH.

No fuel button. Just the touch closure on the lid cover.

No fuel filler cap either.

I was in Chicago recently with my new-to-me 2013 Energi. My mom gets in the car and pops the gas cover button, but I didn't notice. It was a very short ride, about 1 mile. As I was parking, I noticed the "gas door is open" message on the dash. Oh snap! I park and close it.

 

On the way home, she does the same thing! And then I got a CEL on the dashboard. I was pretty sure I knew what it was (driving with the gas door open) but wasn't sure. I thought it would clear itself, but 20 miles later it was still on. Quick stop at the local Ford dealer, and they confirmed that's what it was and reset it.

Although the 2013 to 2016 Ford Fusion Hybrid did not have locking fuel doors, the 2013 to 2016 Ford Fusion Energi had the locking control on the right side of the center console. On the 2017 Ford Fusion Hybrid and Energi, that fuel door control has been moved to the driver's door by the door speaker on both models as shown on page 156 of the owner's manual for the Hybrid and Energi models:

 

Press the button on the driver's door to open the fuel filler door. The fuel filler door may take up to 15 seconds to open before you can insert the fuel filler nozzle.

 

This information is not in the brochure, but I noticed it on August 12. Hope this helps.
