Took my Fusion to the dealership because my headlights would go to brights and then turn off randomly. The dealership could not figure out what was happening..and was going to order a new light stalk. I went through settings...and found lighting...and found "auto brights"...and turned it off...PROBLEM SOLVED!

go to brights and then turn off randomly.

If on a dark road with no other car or street lights ahead of you, the car should switch to high beams automatically. As soon as there are lights ahead, the car should switch to low beams.

When they turned off randomly, did you mean the headlights just switched off completely by themselves?

I've noticed that several things can 'fool' the auto brights. Very reflective signs when approached on an upcoming hill, and one area that I hit every night is a distant cell tower. I guess it's twin red lights make the car think it's a distant car in front of it. But generally in these circumstances the system seems to quickly learn it's mistake and 'fixes' it by turning the brights back on.

The problem that I have (and not a big problem) is that semi trailers with very reflective bumpers seem to fool the system. I'm several car lengths behind a semi and the car just turns on the brights. I have to manually turn them off, but after a few miles it will do it again. This has happened to me about 4 times and I eventually have to go through the menu while driving (not recommended) and turn the auto system off.

Part of my route is very hilly. There would be 1 street light(New Generation Downpointing LEDs)that would turn my brights on and off...both..in relatively rapid order. To me, I can handle operating my brights when I need them. Kind of like sweet tea...I know that if I want sugar in my tea, I can add the proper amount...if I wanted diabetes sugar watered tea I would love sweet tea!
