First week with my first hybrid. This car kicks @ss

Just finished my first week with my new to me 2014 hybrid se. Second commute, first commute I averaged 41.7 mpg and I was amazed, coming from a Yukon xl. After reading the forums and learning how to really drive this car, I got 48.8!

This forum really taught me a lot, THANK YOU. Amazing what you can get out of these cars. Driving is like a game now, trying to beat my high score, I love it. And I'm saving tons of money. I drive 85 miles each way three times a week, so it really adds up.

 

One question though, I was on low fuel today on way home, and it said DTE 40 miles, so I figured it had about a gallon of fuel in it, but I couldn't get more than 10.6 gallons in when I fueled up. Do they fudge the low fuel warning, by 3.4 gallons? Seems odd.

Well you had 40 miles to go which is about a gallon and there might be 1 1/2 gallons left at 0 DTE so that's 2 1/2 gallons left in the 13.5 gallon tank for a net of 11 to be put in. You put in 10.6. You usually wont get closer than that.

Thanks, I thought it was 14 gallons, my bad. But good to know 0 miles to empty really means 60 miles left, only in a hybrid! That's cool

There are many threads about tank capacity. Check out some of those. It is common to see the DTE come on very early. You can possibly use Engineering Test Mode to read the fuel level percent to see how that correlates. There is a thread about ET Mode as well.

It is not good to run modern cars particularly hybrids out of gas. The fuel in the tank at 0 DTE should be considered emergency use only and a prudent driver fuels at around 1/4 remaining. You never know when an emergency or natural disaster will prevent you from fueling.

<chuckle> And here it comes! In Winter somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 I fill up ... no matter what. Once the snow and ice are gone, I let it go until 50 MTE (miles to empty) or warning advisory comes on (depending on car), then fill. However I agree that running to 0 MTE is not good at all.

Crazy fill up today ... MTE (DTE) was 591. Day-am! That is nice!
